《Stretcher》 is a performance that took place during a performance art festival in Hong Kong. The work began at Admiralty MTR Station, passed through Lan Kwai Fong, and ended on the hill towards Sheung Wan. The performance concluded at the moment the performers reached a taxi. Centred on a folding aluminium stretcher, the work involved four performers: three men carrying a female body through different public spaces, slopes, and streets of the city.

The work borrows the visual language of emergency care, medical transport, and bodily support, but it does not offer a clear reason for what has happened. The body on the stretcher appears injured, protected, displayed, and transported at the same time. This ambiguity allows the work to shift meaning as it moves through different urban landscapes. Within the context of a performance art festival, it may be read as a performance. In Lan Kwai Fong, it could be mistaken for a scene of drunkenness, accident, policing, or nightlife aftermath. Between the MTR station and the slopes of Sheung Wan, it becomes something closer to a collective carrying, a ritual, or a public intervention.

The documentation of the work was also structured through multiple perspectives. The artist invited three photographers to record the performance from different positions and sensitivities: one female photographer focused mainly on the emotional state of the performers; one videographer documented the movement of the event; and another photographer captured the relationship between the figures and the surrounding urban environment. These different viewpoints prevent the work from having a single fixed perspective. Instead, Stretcher becomes an event composed through bodies, streets, spectators’ misreadings, and photographic witnessing.

In 《Stretcher》, the stretcher functions both as a tool of support and as a moving stage. The image of three male performers carrying a female body creates a shifting relation between care, power, gender, and dependence. Rather than presenting one stable narrative, the work asks how an interaction between bodies can be renamed by its surroundings: as rescue, control, intimacy, violence, performance, or an unresolved public event.
