Seven Surnames Rice/Congee

Overnight rices from seven people, bad luck(bird poop), friendships

Seven Surnames Rice/Congee is a happening that begins with superstition, bad luck, friendship, and shared eating. The work originated from an accidental event in Hong Kong on the evening of 8 August 2018. After the opening of an exhibition at 1a Space, the artist and her working partners walked towards a bus stop near Kwai Chung Estate. As they passed under a large tree, bird poop fell on the artist’s head. Three people were walking together, but only she was hit. This embarrassing and strangely symbolic incident led her to search online for whether being hit by bird poop meant good luck or bad luck.

According to one Feng Shui remedy found online, the way to dissolve the bad luck was to ask seven households with different surnames for a small portion of rice or congee, mix them together, and eat it. This practice is commonly known as “seven surnames congee”. The next day, the artist contacted her friends and travelled with a stainless steel lunch box to collect rice from seven people with different surnames. After completing the rice-collecting action, she returned to her studio in Kwai Hing, heated the mixed rice with a can of twice-cooked pork, and ate it alone.

In 2019, the work was restaged in Oslo. At KHiO, the artist invited seven people with different surnames to each contribute a bowl of cooked rice as part of a ritual to reverse bad luck. This time, the collected rice was not eaten alone. It was combined and served in the school canteen with eleven side dishes prepared by the artist, becoming a blessing lunch shared with classmates and the public, serving around thirty people.

Seven Surnames Rice/Congee transforms a folk remedy for misfortune into a social, culinary, and performative action. Each bowl of rice carries a surname, a household, a friendship, and a small act of trust. When mixed together, the rice becomes more than food: it becomes a temporary charm made from names, labour, and belief. The work asks how bad luck can be redistributed, how blessing can be gathered, and whether personal unease can be briefly held by a community through the simple act of asking for rice.
