《Marriage-Seeking 2016》 is a performance in which the artist waits in a public setting for someone to marry her. Borrowing the language of marriage-seeking advertisements, romantic expectation, and social ritual, the work turns the desire to be chosen into a performative situation.
The artist’s waiting body becomes both sincere and absurd. She places herself in a position of availability, exposing how marriage is often framed as a promise of love, stability, legitimacy, and belonging. Yet the act of waiting also reveals the vulnerability and violence hidden within this structure: to seek marriage is also to submit oneself to judgement, selection, rejection, and negotiation.
Performed in Iceland in 2016, the work displaces the familiar social script of marriage into an unfamiliar environment. Through this displacement, Marriage-Seeking 2016 asks what it means to look for intimacy through a public system of recognition. Can marriage be separated from fantasy, citizenship, gender expectation, and social value? Or is the wish to be loved always already shaped by the institutions that decide what kinds of relationships are allowed to appear?
