Happening; Competition

Hong Kong 18  Checkers Hegemony

Hong Kong 18 Checkers Hegemony is a happening and competition structured around a game of Chinese checkers. The work centres on a custom-made wooden checkerboard measuring 543 × 543 mm, with 649 holes and 180 marbles. Participants represent different districts of Hong Kong, competing, moving, blocking, and negotiating within the same board.

The work borrows the language of local tournaments and popular entertainment. By naming the event as a “Hong Kong 18 Districts Checkers Hegemony”, the artist transforms a childhood game into an exaggerated but serious public competition. Chinese checkers, usually associated with domestic tables, family gatherings, or casual leisure, becomes here a competitive arena with district representatives, rules, spectatorship, and the desire to win.

On the board, every move involves position, route, obstruction, and waiting. Each participant attempts to advance on behalf of the district they represent, while also having to coexist with other players and pieces within a limited space. The game becomes a model of the city: different districts, identities, and desires move through the same system, pushing, interrupting, and competing with one another.

Hong Kong 18 Checkers Hegemony considers how rules produce opposition, and how people become invested in a temporary and fictional order. Once participants believe they are representing a district, a side, or a possible victory, the game becomes a performance of local identity, collective projection, and imagined power. The work asks how a city can be turned into a game, and how competition transforms everyday relations into positions that can be watched, counted, and fought over.
