He’s Just a Kid! is an animated video installation presented on an LCD screen with soft sculpture. Narrated from the perspective of a bear cub waking from hibernation, the film follows the character as he discovers a painful condition around his rear body. Through the language of cuteness, the work tells an awkward story of constipation, discomfort, and bodily confusion.
The bear cub appears innocent, soft, and childlike, yet his body is already caught in pain. This contrast between cute aesthetics and physical suffering creates a strange emotional space where tenderness, humour, embarrassment, and vulnerability coexist. The film approaches a common but rarely shared bodily experience without turning it into spectacle; instead, it allows discomfort to become small, gentle, and speakable.
By using an animal character, He’s Just a Kid! creates distance from the human body while also making the experience more intimate. The bear becomes a stand-in for anyone who has felt confused, ashamed, or alone inside their own body. His pain is both absurd and familiar, childish and serious.
Together with the soft sculpture, the animation turns an internal bodily problem into a tactile and emotional presence in the exhibition space. He’s Just a Kid! asks how cuteness can hold pain, and how humour might become a way to approach the parts of the body we usually hide, ignore, or struggle to explain.
