Genetic Salon – Hair Pins is the first work in the Genetic Salon series. The work begins with the artist’s experience of visiting hair salons: the moment of being styled, praised, and recognised by a hairdresser can briefly create the feeling of becoming a renewed version of oneself. In the salon mirror, a new hairstyle seems to offer a new future. Yet after returning home, the body, mood, and ordinary conditions of life often remain largely unchanged.

This temporary promise of transformation led the artist to think about the future imagined by genetic engineering. Genetic modification is often presented as a way to change destiny from the beginning: if life can be designed at its source, then the body, ability, illness, and even one’s future path might appear adjustable in advance. The work places this technological promise beside the everyday fantasy of the hair salon, imagining a world in which genetic design could be as accessible and immediate as getting a new hairstyle.

In Chinese-speaking cultures, cutting hair is also associated with renewal, luck, and the removal of unwanted energy. Before the Lunar New Year or before important events, getting a haircut can feel like a small ritual of clearing away the past. Genetic Salon – Hair Pins draws from these everyday beliefs and connects them to DNA spirals, hair accessories, beauty tools, and the imagination of bodily redesign.

The ceramic hair pins in the work appear at once as ornaments, genetic models, medical tools, and future beauty products. Placed on the floor or on a shelf, they seem to wait for use. Genetic Salon becomes an imagined space between a hair salon, a laboratory, and a fortune-telling room, asking what we really desire when transformation is offered as a service: to change the body, to change destiny, or to be recognised as a better version of ourselves.
