Genetic Salon – DJ Conference is a livestream radio programme and public discussion series developed as part of the Genetic Salon project. Supported by Hong Kong Community Radio, the programme took place across three one-hour episodes between 2018 and 2019, hosted by the artist through the persona of DJ Bobby Bobster.
Conceived as a speculative launch event for the future world of Genetic Salon, the programme gathered guests from different fields and everyday positions, including actors, housewives, historians, theologians, body practitioners, and anime lovers. Together, they discussed genetic engineering not only as a scientific issue, but as a question of belief, fantasy, ethics, family, ageing, religion, popular culture, and the body.
Each episode approached genetic technology through a different set of questions: whether one would edit the genes of one’s future child; what kind of future human beings deserve; how the desire for excellence and uniqueness shapes human pursuit; whether genetic testing resembles the story of Pandora; whether God would punish a world with Genetic Salon; how anime imagines bodily transformation; and how Chinese medicine might complicate the mechanistic understanding of the body in Western biomedical models.
Through the format of a DJ conference, Genetic Salon becomes less a fixed artwork than a public thought experiment. The radio programme opens the project to voices outside the artist’s own imagination, allowing speculation, misunderstanding, humour, anxiety, and desire to circulate together. Genetic Salon – DJ Conference asks how the future of the body is discussed before it arrives, and how collective imagination can become the first prototype of a fictional service.

Selected Questions
Genetic testing is a technology that predicts one’s life. Could it become like the story of Pandora’s box — something that cannot be undone once opened?
Could orcs really exist? How do we imagine the boundary between the human and the non-human?
If Genetic Salon really existed, would God punish us?

As a Western technology, does genetic engineering continue a mechanistic view of the body in Western medicine? If we consider the holistic understanding of the body in Chinese medicine, could genetic engineering be imagined differently?
How should we understand bodily ageing? Is age defined by organs, genes, appearance, function, or time?
