Genetic Salon – A Corner of Alternative History is an installation that uncovers the hidden historical conditions behind the speculative world of Genetic Salon. Presented through layers of sand, printed newspapers, flashlights, and wooden brushes, the work invites viewers to physically brush away the surface in order to reveal fragments of history buried underneath.
The installation extends the world of Genetic Salon, a fictional future in which genes become the foundation of power, identity, value, and circulation. In this future, genetic manipulation promises a more ideal existence and even the possibility of tasting life beyond the human species. Yet this technological trajectory also turns “nature” into an enemy: something to be corrected, overcome, or redesigned.
The buried newspapers present events that have happened, as well as scenarios that might happen. Together, they form an alternative historical archive, tracing how past and possible futures could lead to the birth of Genetic Salon. The act of brushing away sand becomes an archaeological gesture, as if the audience is excavating the remains of a future that has already begun.
Through this corner of alternative history, the work asks how a speculative future is produced from existing desires, fears, scientific ambitions, and political conditions. Genetic Salon – A Corner of Alternative History treats the future not as something ahead of us, but as something already buried inside the present, waiting to be uncovered.
