《Examination》 is a performance that borrows the structure of the Hong Kong English listening examination. During the work, the artist invites the audience to sit an exam with her. They are asked to listen to an English listening script written by the artist and complete a test paper. After the exam, a model answer sheet is placed on the desk.
The listening script centres on a male voice commenting on the artist’s earlier work CV of Vagina. This male figure is not a single real person, but a composite character formed from the responses of several men who had previously had sexual contact with the artist and later read CV of Vagina. Their comments, reactions, and interpretations are rewritten into one fictional male voice, turning intimate feedback into a collective form of judgement.
By using the familiar format of an English listening test, the work brings together bodily intimacy, male interpretation, language training, and institutional assessment. The audience may appear to be tested on their comprehension of English, but they are also placed inside a larger examination of gender, sexuality, power, and interpretation. Who has the authority to comment on a body? Whose understanding becomes the correct one? And how can words spoken from intimate encounters be transformed into material that can be listened to, answered, and graded?
In Examination, the test paper becomes a stage where language, sex, artistic interpretation, and power relations meet. The work asks whether an artwork, a bodily experience, or a female body under observation can ever be translated into a model answer.
